Magda Gerber about 1940. Gerber developed a system of infant care that emphasized the competence of infants. She argued that infants are capable of much greater independence than is commonly thought. I make use of many of Gerber's ideas, although some, such as allowing infants to cry themselves to sleep, I reject as too severe.
